Air filter

The air filter ensures that the air drawn by the engine is made free of dust, sand and other debris that are drawn in along with the air by the engine.

An engine cannot cope well with polluted air and the moment the engine no longer gets the right air, the mixture of fuel and oxygen becomes unbalanced. This can cause your engine's performance to drop.

If ‘foreign’ matter gets into the engine in the absence of a proper air filter, it causes damage to the valves, pistons, piston rings and cylinder walls. In extreme cases, it can even spell the end of the engine.

THE FUNCTION OF AN AIR FILTER

The main function of an air filter is to protect the engine from contaminants in the intake air. While driving, the air may contain various particles, such as dust, pollen and dirt. If these particles reach the engine, they can damage the cylinders, pistons and other internal components. An air filter ensures that these contaminants are stopped and thus prevents damage to the engine.

WHEN SHOULD AN AIR FILTER BE REPLACED?

The exact life of an air filter can vary depending on several factors, such as driving conditions and the quality of the air you drive in. Generally, it is recommended to check and change the air filter regularly, usually every 20,000 to 30,000 kilometres or according to the manufacturer's maintenance schedule.

However, there are some signs that it is time to change the air filter:

  • Visible contamination: If you visually inspect the air filter and notice that it is covered with dirt, dust or other contaminants, it is time to replace it. A heavily soiled air filter can impede airflow and adversely affect engine performance.
  • Reduced performance: If your car struggles to accelerate, has hiccups or experiences a decrease in power, this could indicate a clogged air filter. A clogged filter restricts the air supply to the engine, resulting in reduced performance.
  • Increased fuel consumption: A clogged air filter can also lead to increased fuel consumption. When the engine does not get enough clean air, it has to work harder and consume more fuel to deliver the desired performance.
