Boat winches

A safe trailer winch is important. Your boat is often heavy and a trailer winch can only handle a certain weight. If your winch is rusted or damaged, the weight tolerance may be reduced. If you are not sure whether your winch can (still) withstand the weight of your boat, we recommend that you overhaul it or purchase a new one. We at Roan4x4 have a range of trailer winches for the smaller boat for your trailer.

How far can my boat sit over the trailer?
✓ The boat may protrude 20 centimeters on each side. If it protrudes further, you should hang marking signs on it. The total width (trailer + boat) may never exceed 3 metres.

Boat winches: An essential part of any sailing ship
Boat winches are an essential part of any sailboat as they are used to operate sheets and sails. To handle the sails properly, the winches must be easy to operate and robust enough to withstand all sailing conditions. That is why winches are available in many different sizes and materials.

A winch or winch is mainly used on sailboats to provide great forces on the sheets or halyards for operating or trimming the sails. These types of winches are also called sheet winches or halyard winches. Winches come in different sizes depending on the length of the boat, the ropes and the intended use. There are also other types of winches, such as windlasses or sword winches. Generally there are 1 speed winches and 2 speed winches where 2 speed makes operating a winch much easier by allowing it to be operated in either direction. Conventional, manual winches are increasingly being replaced by modern automatic self-tailing winches, which make the use of a sheet clamp superfluous. Winches are mainly operated manually/mechanically with winch handles. On larger sailboats, winches are also often electrically or hydraulically driven.

Winsch or winch?
A winsch is the English name for a winch and both terms are often used interchangeably. There are different types of winches or winches. Sheet winches are just one type of winch. There are also anchor winches, which are also used to operate the anchor and the anchor chain. With a sword winch you can easily raise the sword. On larger sailboats it is more common to find a winch at the base of the mast, the so-called mast winch or halyard winch. These are used to operate the main halyard and are mounted directly on the mast. A special feature of a winch is that the line is not completely rolled up on the winch, but comes off again after a few turns around the winch on the other side.
