When you are in the car, you prefer clean air. To get the clean air inside, all the air passes the interior filter. This filter purifies the air of dust, pollen, dirt or even soot particles emitted by other work traffic. Another common name for the interior filter is pollen filter. About 300 m3 of air flows through the filter every hour. It is therefore important that the interior filter does not get clogged. A dirty or clogged air filter means the air is no longer properly purified. This cannot be good for your health. Think of the soot particles coming in. You then breathe in unhealthy air. Also, if you suffer from hay fever, for example, you may suffer from a lot of allergies due to the pollen that is no longer purified from the air.

To avoid all this, you should change the air filter once a year. The easiest way is to have this done at a service or MOT inspection. There are two types of air filters on the market. An interior filter with active carbon and an interior filter without active carbon. The carbon in the filter ensures that not only dirt and pollen are kept out, but also unpleasant odours. Nobody wants a car that smells because foul odours are coming in. Think of all the exhaust fumes. Do you still feel that your car smells? Chances are it's your air conditioner!

The cause of the nasty smell comes from the growth of bacteria and mould on the grid of your air conditioner's evaporator. An air conditioner is a dehumidifier. The moisture that is extracted from the air goes out past the evaporator. With a combination of the temperature differences and the extracted moisture, it becomes a breeding ground for mould and bacteria. These moulds and bacteria give off a nasty smell. The moment you turn on the air conditioning, these odours are blown into your car, creating a stench in your car.

There is something you can do about this yourself. If, just before you arrive at your destination, you turn off the air conditioning and turn up the fan, blowing air can dry up your evaporator. This reduces the growth of mould and bacteria. We recommend always doing this because it is important to blow clean air into your car. The foul smell is not only annoying, it can also be bad for your health. Inhaling the bacteria-contaminated air can cause infections, allergic reactions and irritation to your eyes and/or airways!
