This starter motor overhaul kit is for the Denso starter motor, used by land rover on all TD5 engines of both the Defender and Discovery.

The Denso starter motor delivers high performance, is reliable and has a lifespan of many years.

For the least possible resistance, Denso provides copper contacts on various parts within the solenoid. When the engine is started, the copper contacts are connected to each other and the starter motor turns. Due to the high amperage, a spark is created when connecting and over time these damage the contacts, resistance is built up. This resistance becomes a factor and is converted into heat; the connectors become hot or erode, in time this promotes further deterioration of the contacts and the (plastic) insulation until eventually the starter motor no longer receives sufficient power and the starter motor cannot rotate the engine.

A distinctive "clicking" sound is heard when attempting to start the engine. This is the plunger in the coil that switches up and down, but due to the lack of current through the contacts, the starter motor will not turn. This type of starter motor has an external solenoid that is easily accessible, making the overhaul with all the parts in this kit an easy job for the handy hobbyist.
